You have heard about Guadeloupe and you have succumbed to the temptation to visit this island.

Great news!

Unfortunately, you only have few days off  to enjoy the wonders of the island.

Don’t worry!

Even if you stay 5 days, 4 days or even 3 days, Guadeloupe islands will charm you,  and I’m pretty sure that you will come back.

I will not hide the fact than 3, 4 or 5 days is really a short time for a trip in Guadeloupe islands, so let me help you enjoying this short stay at best.

Below some advices to have a short but INTENSE trip.

1- Don’t waste your time…

Obvious you will tell me 😉

I mean  that your hours will be so precious during this short trip, it would be a pity to waste them in time consumers activities, so I advice to avoid:

  • Traffic jam

Road traffic can be very heavy in Guadeloupe. You may experience large traffic jams during peak period. Try to not be on the main roads going to Pointe-à-Pitre at these moments. The peak periods are usually between 7:00 am and 9:00am and 4:00pm and 7:00pm.

  • Restaurants for lunch

I will advice to do not have lunch in restaurants. As far as I’m concerned, I prefer enjoying the place where I am, instead of spending my time waiting for my meal sitting at a restaurant table. Otherwise, the service can be very long in some restaurants in Guadeloupe islands.

So, in contrast, rather favor a friendly picnic or a lunch on the go. It’s a really good option when you don’t have much time. Indeed, we have in Guadeloupe islands many snacks options. You can try, for instance, our traditional sandwich « the bokit ». It’s a kind of burger but in a local way… a fried bread filled with ham and cheese or chicken  and creole sauce. You will mostly find it in the food trucks  located almost everywhere.

Furthermore, why don’t make your own picnic basket. There are a lot of traditional french bakeries everywhere (don’t forget Guadeloupe islands is a french land :-)). You can fill up the « baguette » with french ham and cheese or choose a more tropical options: grilled chicken.

To finish this meal with a sweet touch you will be spoilt for choice: « sorbet coco », a local coconut ice-cream sold by street sellers, « sino-bòl », crushed ice with grenadine syrup also sold by the same street sellers, our delicious tropical fruits available on all the markets or chocolate donuts.

Have lunch in this way will allow you to take advantage of the time of the lunch to appreciate the landscapes of Guadeloupe islands.

2- Organize a full day program

The purpose here is not to be overwhelmed by activities during your travel. It is important to take the time to live the moment, to connect with the visited place, to feel the vibes. You cannot experience your trip in this way if you have plenty of activities planned.

What I mean is rather to optimize you day to take advantage of all the time available.

  • Build an itinerary as logical as possible by organizing each steps to avoid round trips and by consequence waste of time.

For instance, you can inspire you with my post about Pointe des Châteaux. I try to organize  each steps of this full day with no round trips.

It will be very useful to prepare before your trip what you will do each day. You can refer to my post « 5 steps to plan your trip in Guadeloupe islands », you will find in the part 4 some advices to build you « Unique » itinerary.

  • Try to fill your day from sunrise to sunset.

Early activities: Get up earlier during your trip, you will lengthen your day and build « unique » and memorable experiences.

Why don’t start your day trip with an awesome sunrise. The best place to enjoy it is at Pointe des Chateaux in Saint-François.   I love starting my day in this way: it’s a really invigorating activity that you do not normally do. It’s often my holiday pleasure. It is a way to recharge my batteries. The serenity of the moment and the beauty of the landscapes make it a truly special moment. In addition, considering your tight timing, admiring the sunrise allows you to combine the useful with the pleasant: get up early to enjoy your day at best while marveling at an unforgettable spectacle.

The early morning is also a good moment to go to the beach. I have already done a post about this experience and the reasons why you should try it too.

I love going to the beach in the early morning.

Evening activities: The evening is also favorable to experience strong emotions. Don’t deny yourself the pleasure: the day is not finished yet 🙂

Start the day with a sunrise and of course finish it with the beauty of a tropical sunset. You should definitely not miss an amazing sunset in Guadeloupe islands. I love watching the sunset sitting in the sand feet in the water. Time is suspended, I no longer take my eyes off the horizon … in the hope of seeing the famous green ray.

The spectacle of the setting sun is captivating everywhere in Guadeloupe islands but the beaches of Deshaies, Pointe-Noire, Bouillante and Vieux-Habitants cities are undeniably the best spots. If you are there at the end of the day, do not miss this unforgettable show.

To continue the day and enjoy Guadeloupe once nightfall, you can wander in the night markets. I think that travelling without experiencing life markets is not travelling. So spend time for this activity in the evening. It will also be an opportunity to bring back delightful dishes for your dinner.

The main night markets are:

  • Moule: On Wednesday from 4:00pm to 8:00pm, Boulevard du Général de Gaulle
  • Saint-François: 5:00pm to 9:00pm, Avenu de l’Europe
  • Gosier: On Friday from 5:00pm to 9:00pm, near Datcha beach

An other unusual experience is to go to the beach at night. Indeed, some beaches are lit at night for the pleasure of both travelers and local people.  Enjoy a water at 28 ° C at night with the reflection of the moon in the sea and the starry sky is possible in Guadeloupe islands. And you should undoubtedly try this.

These beaches are lit at night:

  • Sainte-Anne  beach, the one in the city center
  • Datcha beach in Gosier
  • Caraïbes beach in the city of Pointe-Noire

You can also devote the early evening to a more cultural visit. The Memorial act, a wonderful museum on slavery history in Caribbean islands is open till 8:00 pm.

Practical advices:

Opening hours: Monday: Closed, Tuesday to Thursday: 9:00am to 7:00pm, Friday to Saturday: 9:00am to 8:00pm and Sunday: 10:00am to 6:00pm

3. Don’t try to see everything, you can not anyway…

Last but not least, do not try to see everything, you can not anyway… Guadeloupe islands is a destination with an infinite range of activities, landscapes that means that even in a month of travel, we still have not finished discovering its beauties. So with your few days of exploring, it would be a waste of trying to see everything.

My two master words will be : SELECT AND INTENSIFY.

  • SELECT what you want to do accordingly with what Guadeloupe islands has to offer.
  • INTENSIFY each step of your travel by creating strong experiences with small moments.
